Hewlett-Packard Co. shares surged Wednesday after reports that the council is considering removing CEO Leo Apotheker technology companies, who worked for less than a year.

Citing two unnamed people "familiar with the problem," Bloomberg reported Wednesday that the HP board intends to hold a meeting to discuss getting rid Apotheker, 58.

HP CEO began on November 1 after HP ousted the previous CEO, Mark Hurd, following the ethics scandal. Since the advent Apotheker, though, HP has the stock declined, continuing the decline that began in the Hurd is going.

A possible source said Apotheker is replaced by - at least temporarily - by Meg Whitman, former CEO of the online marketplace eBay Inc. Whitman has joined the HP board in January.

If Apotheker was asked to leave the HP, this is the second time he was fired from the post of CEO. He left his former employer, the German business software maker SAP AG, after less than two years as CEO amid a customer revolt over rising prices and growing employee dissatisfaction.

HP spokesman Michael Thacker said the company, based in Palo Alto, Calif.., Would not comment on rumors or speculation.

HP shares rose $ 2.27, or 10 percent, to $ 24.74 in afternoon trading. In the past year, shares have traded from $ 22.13 to $ 49.39.
